Trustees play a vital role in providing strategic guidance and governance, ensuring charities can deliver essential services to communities across Ireland. This Giving Tuesday we’re shining a light on Boards of Trustees across the country. Here we chat to Mary Canavan, a Board Member with the Irish Cancer Society.

Can you tell us a little about you?

I am an Associate Professor in Immunology at Trinity College Dublin where my research focuses on understanding the immunological mechanisms which drive the development of autoimmune diseases, such Rheumatoid Arthritis and Inflammatory Bowel Disease. We collaborate with several pharmaceutical companies, clinicians, translational scientists and patients to maximise the impact of our work and ensure the successful translation of our findings from bench to bedside. Outside of my day to day work I’m also a Board Member with the Irish Cancer Society.

What inspired you to become a Charity Trustee?

I was deeply affected by the work that the charity does. I felt like I could make a contribution to that organisation, and I really wanted to give back.

What does being a Charity Trustee mean to you?

It’s really worthwhile and that I’m contributing something professionally and personally that makes even a small difference in that sector. It’s really, really fulfilling.

What did you find most surprising about becoming a Trustee?

What surprised me was how normal the interactions were with all the other Trustees on the board. The board environment for me, while obviously very professional, is also very personal.

What advice would you give to someone considering becoming a Trustee?

I think the biggest quality that you can really bring is just passion and enthusiasm for what they’re trying to do.

What one word would you use to sum up being a Trustee?

Fulfilling.
