Trustees play a vital role in providing strategic guidance and governance, ensuring charities can deliver essential services to communities across Ireland. This Giving Tuesday we’re shining a light on Boards of Trustees across the country. Here we chat to Aedín O’Leary, an Independent Non-Executive Director with Charities Institute Ireland.

Can you tell us a little about you?

I am an experienced non-executive director and sustainability advisor to boards. I have over 25 years’ experience in financial services, spanning asset and wealth management, funds, pensions, tax and life insurance. I previously qualified and practised as a tax consultant. I am also an Independent Non-Executive Director with Charities Institute Ireland.

What does being a Charity Trustee mean to you?

It’s really enriching to be part of a charity board, helping steering the achievement of tangible results.

What did you find most surprising about becoming a Trustee?

Not to underestimate the value you can bring to a board in lots of different ways would be one thing that surprised me.

In your opinion what are the most important skills and qualities that Trustees bring to charities?

Just being a collaborative kind of consensus building person is very important because it is a team effort at the end of the day.

What advice would you give to someone considering becoming a Trustee?

Well, the first thing I would say to anyone considering becoming a Charity Trustee is to find an organisation that really resonates with you, that means something to you.

What one word would you use to sum up being a Trustee?

Privilege.
